About the city

 Le Mans is a city in western France located on the Sarthe River. Traditionally the capital of the province of Maine, it is now the préfecture (capital) of the Sarthe département, and the seat of the Roman Catholic diocese of Le Mans. Its inhabitants are called Manceaux and Mancelles.

City areas

Le Mans consists of 6 sectors with a dozen districts each. Some sectors specialize in urban transportation, other in environment and a better quality of life.

Restaurants and nightlife

A very good variety of restaurants is found in the town center and especially in or around the old city. The majority of bars and pubs are located close to Place de la Republique.

Transportation

Getting around for tourists generally means between the railway station and the city center, and that can be achieved by a 30-minute walk or a 5-minute bus ride.

Events

 The Grand Prix of Endurance is by far the best-known feature of Le Mans, but events are many and they fall in a wide range of domains.

Attractions

Le Mans has a well-preserved old town and a cathedral dedicated to St Julian of Le Mans, honored as the city’s first bishop. There are remnants of a Roman wall in the old town and Roman baths by the river.

History and civilization

The rich and 17 centuries long history of Le Mans has left its fingerprint on the city by many beautiful reminders of the past and a gloriously restored old city.

When to go to Le Mans

Le Mans is a fascinating city year-round, with lots of things to do in both summer and winter. However, most visitors arrive between May and September when the weather is the most reliable.
